I forget you ibm spec, but if it says pc2100 ONLY, your chance is to check the "backward compatibility with pc2100" feature of the ram you are looking at. go to the manufacturer's site or google for this.
as long as your ram supports this, you can mix it.
i have my dell poweredge 400sc with 3 pc2100 256mb and 1 pc2700 (compatible with 2100), free ar, and it even runs dual channel without problem.

do you have the links to the 512mb and 256mb? sounds good...
