When you connect directly, your ISP assigns your PC an IP address, and it can work fine. But when you put a router in between, the IP address is assigned to the router. You need to set up your own network so that your router can direct traffic to your 2 or more PCs. Use DHCP (auto assign IP address) on your 2 PCs and XP's Networking Wizard to help set it up.
