how to uninstall Norton

I intalled Norton antivirous software in my laptop, for whatever reason, one of the files is corrupted, and it does not function properly. I tried to uninstall it from my Window XP control panel. It shows that the program was removed, however it seems the antivirous program still on every time I turn on my computer, I can seen the logo of Norton still shown on the right bottom corner of the screen, but it was disabled. Then I tried to reinstall again, but I can not do it because it says the other version still exists in my computer. Can somebody tell me if there is other way I can remove the whole old program from my computer.Otherwise I am thinking to reinstall the whole operating system. Thanks
