There's probably nothing wrong with you hard drive. Sony has some kind of mechanism in their Vaio computers that will force users to restore systems with the supplied system recovery CD. If you want you make a clean installation of any version of Windows you installation will fail.

Sony used to post a utility and installation instructions on their support website to work around this issue. Unfortunately it seems that they have removed all links to this utility.

Now the only way to install Win2K is: restore Win98 with your system recovery CD first, then run an ugrade installation of Win2K.
