Pls help: Desktop icons all

After I finished some word files (and web browsing now and then), I found all the icons on my desktop disappeared.

The background is still there and I haven't encountered difficulty in opening programs (yet - hope never).

What could be the problem and how can I fix it? Your help is appreciated. Thanks a ton!

BTW, the OS is XP.
