screen resolution

Just bought a DELL desktop without monitor(I through my old desktop away and kept the monitor). My hu*****and want to install linux and windows xp both, so we did repartition of disk and reinstalled windows xp. At the end of installation, I got the notice that the system optimized the display resolution. But when I restart windows xp, the display resolution is 640*480 with 16 color and I can't change it in control panel. This monitor works well with my old computer.
