well, seems I don't press "hook" before I dial. My machine is like this: In "fax" mode, press number, then "start". It will start running.

If you said you can send fax in the same area code, another possibility is you don't have long distance. Sometimes you may have a long distance across states, but don't have something called "local long distance". Anyway.
