are RAM bad quality?

I bought two 512 memories to increase my laptop's RAM.It was 512 RAM.After I installed these two new chips,my pc shows RAM is 704! It is suppose to be 1G
RAM, what is the problem?Is it possible that one of the chips doesn't work well?
