if it were me or my experiences

3 partitions:
1. Main os partition (25~50G)
2. Data partition (regedit, profile image path set to D:)
3. Backup OS partion or experimental or rescue OS partion (10G or so)

Each time only the main os partion is restored. All 3 are primary.

FOr the formated partition, you can try easydata recovery to recover part of your files..
