I think the problem may be that you don't have the fonts on your computer that the author is using on his computer. For Microsoft Word on
Windows (and only on Windows, not on the Mac), it's possible to configure
Word so that it saves all fonts actually in the document. This will make the
document somewhat bigger, but it insures that the fonts are then available
on any computer.

This can be done in Word by clicking on Tools, then Options, and then
the Save tab. Then the author should check the "Embed TrueType fonts"
checkbox.
