how to use tv as laptop monitor?

I tried to connect my Ascer Aspire laptop to my TV. I used laptop's VGA connect to tv's VGA, also tried to connect tv's white/yellow/red plugs, always get no signal message. I made sure set TV to the selection of PC. What else should I do? Many thanks.
