most likely the bottleneck is memory

Small memory (256M) would cause windows XP to do a lot of swapping, which is very slow for an old laptop disk.

Chinese font uses bigger font library, would cause system to use more memory and disk activity. XP Pro also requires more memory than XP Home as it starts more daemons for more functionalities.

You should see a big performance boost after you increased memory. For 256M, XP Home or W2000 is recommended.If you don;t have specific reason to upgrade XP home to Pro, stay with HOME for your old machine.
