X2 6000+ plus 8800GT should run any modern games

This is a very good CPU. In fact, it supports gaming better than most of the quad-core Phenom due to its faster clock speed (3 GHz).

Intel does have many nice CPUs. Most C2D CPUs can be overclocked easily.
