Used Acronis True Image 2009 to backup OS drive to 2nd internal,

I used Acronis True Image 2009 to backup (full method) my 1st hard drive to the active primary partition on the 2nd internal, but it appeared dead after 40% done.I had to reboot my computer.

Now I am defragmenting my hard drive, which really takes time. I am asking if the defragmentation would help solve the dead problem in the process of full backup. Also, Is there any other backup software that you can recommend? Is the backup feature with Window XP good enough that I don't have to resort to other specific backup software?

Any input is GREATLY appreciated.
