In general, the clicking sound is due to aggressive power saving features where the drive frequently performs an automatic head park operation while the
disk platter spins down. Other drives perform a load/unload operation (a lifting mechanism removes the heads from the disk surface before the drive
spins down and returns the heads to the disk surface only after a sufficient rotation rate has been reached on the next power-up). Aside from saving power,
what's more important about load/unload technology is that the risk of shock damage (frequent in a mobile environment) is reduced by parking heads off the
disk such that head motion cannot result in head-to-disk contact.
