No default speakers. What may be the problem?

I recently installed a new copy of Window XP Pro on my PC (The old OS is Window Vista Basic). However, the speaker is not working after installation. Check the Audio Screen on Control Panel, the "dault device" area is gray and I can't change Volume or do anything. It seems the Windows doesn't recognize the speaker coming with LCD monitor. I checked the connection and even pluged in an outside speaker. But none of them works. The Windows just does recognize these speakers . Does anybody have a clue what may be the problem?
