SOS - notebook died?!

I opened my notebook today, just could not get in the windows. It displayed "initialize improperly".

I then tried putting in the xp home ed. CD, started it at the CD. But I could not repair it. I then may "set up" the computer instead of "repair". But the computer failed copying one file from the CD. I then stopped it.

My first question is, will the windows re-installation destroy the current documents (not system) in the computer?

Is it the ONLY way to take out the hard drive to get the data in it? (I never back up any of my documents in the computer. _:'( )

Any response would be highly appreciated.
