I can think of a few possiblities:

1. Monitor cable or connector is brocken.

2. The scanning frequency (and resolution) has been set beyong monitor's capability.

3. A rare situation (only happens to a few types of motherborad), when a USB device has short circuit or draw too much power from the port, the onborad video card will not work.
