请教ubuntu installing problem?

My PC already has Window xp, I want to install ubuntu (linux system) into my PC. Right now my PC has two disks (C and D), in the C disk, it still has 150GB free space.
During installing, select disk, if I chose:
1) /dev/had:IDE1 master (had) -40.0GB
2) Resize IDE1 master, partition #1 (hda1) and use free space.
I don’t know if it will damage the data in my PC? Thank you very much.
