1)The performance of SATA-2 500G compare to IDE 60G hard disk is huge. You can try to install Vista on both of them and compare their performance index.

2)I will not mix any hard drive with DVD - connected them into the same cable.( - even using ATA-66 cable) Windows will choose the slowest mode for data transfer. Use separate ports for each type of the devices.

(Those low end computers will save a cable and connect the hard drive with DVD, you can see Windows will set the transfer mode into 0 or 1.)
