紧急求助！local area connection

大家好。遇到这样的问题：
原来家里用laptop 上网，一切正常。最近国内新买的(我在澳洲)IBM T60,上网时遇到麻烦。Double click“网络连接”, 显示TPG(只是isp的名字) 网络连接已断开。Double click 该图标，要求提供user name and password. 输入后，无法接通网络。于isp 联系，他问我在网络连接中是否有“local area connection”. 没有该显示。他认为问题在此，让我install local area connection from the disk. 不知大家有过这种经历吗？能帮我一下吗？谢谢
