USB controller problem

My new laptop(T61) with vista basic can't recognize any external connection, like mouse, external hard drive, PC card adapter.There are question mark under "Device Manager"--"Other device". I try to update the driver and it can't find one through internet or computer search. When I first used this computer, it didn't have this problem. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?
