Need advice for backing up data from a disk failed to boot.

My Maxtor hard drive failed to boot. The interface is ATA. The model is ATA/133.
Before attemping to reimage it, I would like to see if I can back up data files
from it. So I installed it into another PC as a secondary drisk.
I could see it from BIOS. But from XP disk manager, I could not.
I verified that the jump settings are on cable select so it should automatically become a
slavery drive. Are there other things I might have missed in order to see it from
XP disk manager? Thank you for you adivice.
