VGA output signal and S video output signal are different,

those $5 converters do not do the translation work, that is why you have unrecognized signals on your TV. The box, however, does not only transfer signals, but also "translate" them (just like how your modem converts analog data to digital data). The con about the box is that you wont get excellent quality on a big screen TV because of the resolution. I have a 55" plasma, I would only set the resolution at 800x600. But it works, and very easy to set up. the box comes with all cable you will need. I am not a tech, hopefully you can understand what I mean.
