hello, i am new comer, now i have a problem with my pc, anyone can help me to solve my problem?

my hard disk was separated into two regions, and there are two operation systems in my computer, windows me and windows xp, each in one of the regions of the hard disk. now i want to format one of them--windows xp, it tells me that there are some softwares are runing, it cannot continue to format.
