have you ever tried AnyDVD by SlySoft?

it automatically cracks the DVD protection on background. I haven't had a single "protection" problem using this. Once it's been cracked, you can use any burning or shrinking software to convert it or burn it. I usually use Nero Recode, which does a nice job.
