Can't get word 2000 to work

Got a barebone computer for kid to do home work. Using professional XP. downloaded service pack 1A alreday. However, I just can't get word 2000 to work. I have two different copies of office 2000 professional. Every thing such as excel and powerpoint works fine. The same office 2000 disk works fine on another computer.

Other than format the hard disk, is there any thing esle I can do?

On teh same computer, office 97 wouldn't work neither. Every other programs works. Just not word.
