The author's views of the Cold War hark back to the hoary "moral equivalence" argument popular in the days after Vietnam, which saw the U.S., not the Soviet Union, as the primary instigator of the Cold War. Mr. Freeman says that it was America's anticommunist "ideological crusade" that turned the Soviet Union into a hostile rival, creating "international tension and conflict and an increasing militarism of American society."
The gulag, Mao's Great Leap Forward, Soviet adventurism in the Third World and the toxic Marxism that led to the Cambodian killing fields might never have happened. In "American Empire," President Nixon's supposed misdeeds in Cambodia get several pages, Pol Pot none at all. Mr. Freeman even sees the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979—the real start of the tragedy there today—as a reasonable response to CIA support for the rebels fighting the puppet government that Moscow had installed three years before.
