I have a friend who has a Ph.D. degree. Right after he got his Ph.D. degree, he could not find any Ph.D. level job (his wife with a master's degree did get a job). So he just took a job in a lab cleaning test tube for something like $8/hr. At the same time, he also took some classes on using some software tool. After about 6 months, he found a more appropriate job. Today, he is well established, and will not worry about losing a job because he can easily find his next job.
