If the person has reached the age of 65 years, 2M might be enough because Medicare should kick in. The most expensive expense in US is not the living expense, but the medical expense and nursing home expense.
That is why people should be careful about the retirement age. Without a job, the person might be able to afford the expensive medical/dental insurance.
