Just came back from a vacation, rented a mid size--2004 Chevy Malibu 4 Cyclinder auto for 5 days. Since quite a few people asked about it previousely, I figure I will share my comparison of it to 2004 Camry LE I4 auto(my wife's car), and a 94 Accord EX I4 auto(had one earlier).
1. Whats the most fun?
--Hands down the 94 accord I had was the most fun to drive. The sound of engine rev was pleasing to hear at high rpms. The suspension of it was firm, sports car like. Malibu was closer to Camry, a bit soft for my taste, but I guess that was how it was designed to be, a comfortable ride.
2. Which would I take on a long trip or day-to-day?
--A close call between the camry and the malibu, both have soft/comfortable rides. The Malibu that I rented didn't have a CD, and the my wife's camry had one, which comes handy(not sure if standard or option) on a long trip. The interior of the camry felt a bit bigger. Also, the outside of the camry felt bigger, as the camry, felt to me, a bit more difficult to manuver.
You can really go no wrong in picking either, but I'd probably go with Camry in long trip, and Malibu for day-to-day rush hour drive.
3. Options and convenience.
--Accord was an EX and was a 94, so take that out of the picture. Between the Camry and Malibu(that I rented), I have to give a thumb up for Malibu's Keyless entry-- came with the keyless trunk opener. The best thing is, the remotes operates like 50 yards away. For the Camry keyless remote, you have to be quite close for it to work. The interier of the Malibu looks really cheap, I am talking about the parts being used, not after it's worn. The Camry look much more upscare--relatively speaking.
4. Apperance
--Well, let's compare them with the 2004 accord. My personal preference out of the 3 is Malibu. It looks more agile and slim, doesn't look fat and old like the other 2.
All things aside. I think Malibu is a very nice car, both driving and it's design. I am not sure how much a Malibu cost nowadays, but I would guess around 18k, same as Accord and Camry. Put resale value of the Camry and Accord into the picture, no wonder most Chinese likes to buy Camry and Accord--they are certainly top sellers for a good reason. Now if you are buying a 1-2 year old car, or drive a car to death and get a killer deal on GM cars, I cannot understand why people still want to buy Accord or Camry. I figur a 2 year old camry or accord is still very expensive(say 14k???), but a 2 year old Malibu is probably around 10k. I think Camry and Accords are good, but not 4k better then Malibu.
But anyhow, your money, buy what you like. Those are just my thoughts on these 3 cars.
