Yeah, that rear brake/tail light on a Honda Odyssey 2008 can get really stubborn with age—especially if it hasn’t been removed in years. What you’re running into is very common: the locating pins get stuck in the body grommets.
Here are the tricks that usually work when the usual pry-tool method isn’t enough:
Why it’s stuck
-
There are 2 metal/plastic alignment pins (not just screws) holding the housing
-
Over time, rubber grommets harden and grip the pins
-
Dirt + slight corrosion basically “glues” it in place
? What actually works
1. Pull straight back (not out to the side)
This is the #1 mistake.
-
The assembly does NOT slide sideways
-
It must come straight back toward you
-
Even a slight angle will jam the pins tighter
Try this:
-
Grab the housing with both hands
-
Rock it left-right gently, then pull straight back
2. Use controlled force (more than you think)
It often needs a firm pop.
-
Place one hand on each side
-
Give a sharp, quick pull instead of slow pressure
-
Think “pop it loose,” not “ease it out”
3. Add a “shock” to break it free
If it’s really stuck:
-
Use the palm of your hand to smack the side of the light (toward the rear of the van)
-
Or gently tap around the edges with a rubber mallet
This helps break the seal between pin and grommet.
4. Use a better pry point (carefully)
If you’re prying:
-
Use plastic trim tools only
-
Pry from the inner edge (closer to the tailgate seam)
-
Twist slightly to create tension, then pull
? Don’t pry outward like a door—you can crack the housing.
5. Lubricate the pins (advanced trick)
If you can create even a tiny gap:
-
Spray a little silicone spray or WD-40 into the seam
-
Let it sit 5–10 minutes
-
Then try the pull again
6. Last resort: string/strap pull trick
-
Loop a strong strap or cord around the assembly
-
Pull straight back evenly with both hands
This gives better leverage without damaging the plastic.
What NOT to do
-
Don’t use a screwdriver directly on painted metal (will chip paint)
-
Don’t twist the housing hard (can snap the pins)
-
Don’t pull at an angle
After you get it out
Before reinstalling:
-
Put a little silicone grease on the pins
→ Next time it’ll come out easily
If you want, tell me whether it’s the inner tailgate light or outer corner light, and I can give you the exact pin locations so you know exactly where it’s binding.
