This particular model has 4 sensors.  You can hook them to any suspected parts and drive the car to see which sensor pick up the noise.  There are other makers and models such as Matco smart ear that comes with only one sensor.

I have very similar problem.  Initially I thought the noise came from the rear right wheel.  Replaced the wheel bearing but didn't fix the problem.  I am thinking about getting one of these kind of tools.
