Mobil1 changed 0W40 formulation using GTL base stock instead of VISOM. New Mobil1 FS 0W40 is thinner then previous version, almost being 0W30 oil. HTHS went from 3.8cp to 3.6cp. They moved to same base stock as Shell (Pennzoil) but I think HTHS numbers are poor (Pennzoil Platinum 5W40 has HTHS of 3.88cp).
What is behind this decision is not known.
But is you getting your oil in Wal Mart be aware: ONLY Castrol 0W40 carries BMW LL-01.
In other stores you might find other oil that carry BMW LL-01 specification, including: Castrol 0W30, Pennzoil Platinum 5W40 etc.
M1 FS 0W40 kept specifications: MB 229.5, Porsche A40 and VW 502.00.
