Q:"I have a 1992 500 SEL (W140) with about 102,000 miles. Recently the car's ASR light has been coming on and it goes into limp mode. Obviously this can be very dangerous especially on the highway. I took it to a Mercedes Benz shop in the area and they hooked the car up to their diagnostic machine and everything was normal. When I picked the car up and drove it home from the shop it was driving normal however, today it did the same thing again; the ASR light came on and the car barely moves. Once I turn the car off, the light goes out however, I go a short distance and it happens again. Please advise. Thanks."
A:"Look at the insulation of your harness and see if any wires are exposed. best place to look is at the injectors ends, move the boot and look underneath it at the colored wires, and the condition of the insulator. It could be either, or both, as they are both considered failure prone items in W140. In terms of cost, they are both about the same, so I can't tell you it's less expensive to start at one or another. But if I were you, I would start with the harness if its falling apart, because even if its not the reason of the ASR issue, it will cause other issues with the injectors and misfiring down the road. So in short, you will benefit from replacing your harness, even if its not the sole or direct reason for the ASR issue, so if you replace the harness and it doesn't fix the ASR, it is still money well spent (that's not the case if you replace the throttle and ASR doesn't get fixed)
“move the boot and look underneath it at the colored wires”, boot是啥东西?
