Yes, the rationale is that young kids tends to drive faster. That is why they usually have much higher accident rate. Roll over issue is inherited with SUV due to its design. The high speed handling of SUV is not as good as sedan. That is why the race cars are all very low so that the control could be much precise at high speed due to their low center of the gravity.
SUV is great for places with a lots of snow because it has high clearance, and AWD would be even better for that situation. However, AWD only helps you to get you going (get out of snow), but would not help you "much" to stop. Therefore, AWD should not be the major safety benefit for fast driving. On the other hand, due to its higher clearance, SUV might sustain more impact in a head on collision.
That has been said, think what you need the most before your purchase. If your son is very responsive, and not an aggressive driver, buying a SUV might not be a bad choice at all.
