For the last two weeks, I have been using carfax VIN check to select a used car for my son.
Generally speaking, they are good, and helpful.
But I do have following incidents that made me doubt how reliable they are.
For one VIN, there are two mileage readings on the same date, one is 39,840 another is 43,043. If both are right, that means in a single day, this car added 3203 miles to it. Dividing that by 24 hours, it has to go 133 miles per hour.
Another car added 30,000 miles in just 20 days!
I don’t think these are possible. I e-mailed them, and they said they would contact the source and get back with me.
Another interesting example is my old car (Corolla). I bought it new in 95, and had 3 accidents on it. Each cost me 1000 or more to repair hood, bumper, side panel, etc. None of these showed up in the report. The 4th accident in last November totaled the car. The insurance company had paid me, but ironically the report says all “Good News, Ok here Ok there…”
Anyway, I just want to throw out my two sense and share with the group.
