many recent euro cars are using a tranny without deipstick, my 06 jetta tdi is one of those. those tranny service is a daunting task - most have to go to dealer for 400-500 (savvy diyers can do it, material costs about 200). 

 

btw, your description on "filler tube seal" is very vivid :)
