It all depends. The minimium requirement of thickness (factory recommendation) of brake pads on my car (Lexus LS400)is 1 mm. If the repair shop said that there was only 1.5 mm left then there is possibly more than 1.5 mm left. The shop has all those tricks to sell you the service.
I would drive this car, try several hard braking to see if the car stops well. I would say that antother 2K miles is not a problem at all.
Also, try another shop to measure the thickness of the pads.
