Hit and Run - unhappy ending :(

I was in a hit and run. A witness saw the accident and got me the other driver's plate number.  My insurance contacted the witness who provided the other car's plate number.  The witness said that she followed the other car and got the plate number from the parking lot that is close to the accident place.  

Well, this doesn't make her proof valid. She needs to get the number right on the accident spot. So my insurance can't do anything with the other car.  And I have to pay for myself to fix my car.  If I want to take the other car to court, I have to do it by myself.   What a world!  Anybody has idea what I should do?  Or have to suck it up?  Sigh ... ...
