Hit and run continued

Review of what happened:  was in a hit and run.  But there was a witness who gave me the other car's plate number and I reported the police.   My insurance is investigating now.  

I called my insurance to check to see where they are now.  They said they are still trying to get hold of my witness to ask how she got the other car's number and why she came back to give me the number.  

Can I contact the witness now?  What can i say or do? It seems we need to be very careful with wording.  Thanks!
