if you have a truck based suv or truck, there will be a part more like part of the rail for you to put your jack stands.,
google it and you will find.
for cars, most of them don't have a rail frame, so, if you put your hands behind the flanges( the small metal wall that under the car for you to use the jack from the car). you would feel some rippled areas (like waved metal texture), that is were you should put your jack stands.

btw, Bont' use after market jack on the flanges, you will bend them. if you really want to use, use a adapter or
a wood block with a clut in it
