I moved from IA to IL. Returned the plate to IA, they sent me money back for unused days for the rest of the year. But the sale tax you have to pay the different if you move to a higher tax state, and no refund if you move to a low tax state. There is 6 months period though, means if you already bought the car over 6 months before move, then you don't have to pay. I don't know other states.
