Overhaul your transmission? NO way.

To begin with, you won't have the proper tools for this job. To do a transmission repair properly requires certain specialized tools that no other purpose than to work on transmission. If you take good care of your car, changing transmission fluid and the transmission filter at the proper intervals, a transmission job may be become necessary only once in 100,000 miles. Perhaps many tens of thousands of miles more will go by without a transmission problem. A properly cared for transmission may last the life of the car itself.
Rebuilding a transmission requires a case Holder
A case holder sets the transmission on end and holds it in a position so that it can be worked on. If you are reading between the lines, you have also just realized that to work on the transmission, it must be removed from the car. To do so will require lifting the car high enough to be able to get under the thing.
A transmission will weigh between 175-250 pounds. Even with a big strong buddy, that's a lot of weight to be holding over your head while someone makes certain every bolt is unfastened.
After the transmission is placed in the case holder, there are spring-loaded clutch packs in the transmission that require a special tool to relieve the pressure so you can get them apart to work on the clutch they contain. Still ready to tackle one? Read on. One universal clutch compressor might cost $75-125.00 and for Mercedes Benz 722.6 transmission, $400.00.
A TRANSIMSSION MUST BE SPECIALLY CLEANED
If you've successfully broken down the transmission and repaired and replaced the necessary parts, it is extremely important to make certain that every part is thoroughly clean. It has got to be absolutely spotless. That will require a pressure cleaner or a heat cleaner.
Okay, Okay. So you are really one of those stubborn ( and maybe mechanically gifted ) types. If the need for special tools, tools not found around the home garage, doesn't deter you, maybe this will. Forget the dozens and dozens of parts. Let's just look at cost. A case holder costs in the neighborhood of $200, the clutch pack, $150 and the heated pressure washer, around $1,000.
Add up the cost of those three special tools alone-forget about all the hours of labor, never mind the cost of replacement parts- and the cost is roughly equal to the total cost of hiring a trained mechanic to do the whole job for you, parts included. And a transmission shop will guarantee its work. Still thinking about it? Forgettaboutit.
