“First change the battery, then the alternator” is a standard procedure. What will happen if it still doesn’t work after changing the alternator? The answer is not something you would like to see…

While buying a battery from an independent retailer rather than the dealer is a common practice for economic reasons, you are truly recommended to go back to BMW dealer if it is not working properly, particularly when changing alternator is concerned.

It is very unlikely that an independent store nowadays sells uncharged batteries.
