Crumple zone shmumple zone?

Transverse mounting did initially provide that benefit, but it was through engineering compromise and loss of performance, rather than better technology.

Properly designed longitudinal platforms (Audi, BMW, MB) employ engine compartments that force the engine into the ground in case of a crash, and collapsible drive shafts. These cars are definitely not less safe than Volvos. Yes they command a price premium, but that's what you pay for avoiding compromises, and that's what I mean by "good".

Of course, even better are mid- and rear-mounted engine designs. The entire front trunk is your crumple zone, and sometimes you get one in the front and one in the back, too!
