My 06 VW Jetta TDI has DSG, but I used the manual mode only once just for checking it out. I don't see much benefit by using it.
I don't oppose for you to learn it, just feel unnecessary to make life more than simple. Modern technology has made auto transmission as efficient or very close to/as manual one, gas wise not much different. My principle is - life, the simpler the better.
In China or any least developed nations, even some european countries, people have to live with the stick shift due to financial straints (obviously stick shift is cheaper); it doesn't mean they don't want to drive automatic or they feel stick shift has advantage over auto.
There is a drawback not sure if you have thought about - when the day comes you want to sell your car with stick shift, the number of potential buyers are slim, that is being translated into either it's very hard for you to sell it, or you'll have to bear a big loss when you have no other ways out.

DSG has two clutches. It is not a tiptronic tranny.
