One thing you can try

is to flush the heater core. Disconnect in & out pipe to heater core (the same ones as mechanic checked). use water hose used in home and garden to flush the heater core. If water hose doesn't fit in or out pipe connected to heater core, buy fittings from auto parts store. I did my for Tauras that had the same problem as yours. Now it works.
