Speed sensor question, please help

Hello,

My honda odyssey's (96 junk) check engin light was on when I turned the switch to the D4 abruptly on the cross street. Also, the light of D4 blinks sometimes. I brought it to the dealer and cost 65 to get the code of the problem. The dealer told me that a new speed sensor should be replaced that would cost about 299 (parts+labor) plus tax. The car runs as usual except that the light is on with D4 blinking sometimes. My question is that, do i have to replace it? Is it going to affect the transmission without replacing the speed sensor? I really don't want to spend extra on this old car. Please help!
