The paddle shifters are attached on the steering wheel. They engage and lock the gears pretty quickly. It is much faster than the ordinary auto tranny. It is sort of like the "sports" button on your M. However mpg goes down quite a bit as a price of faster shift and faster speed, not to mention that it would also be quicker for your car to appear on a copy's radar screen!
